Lost your car insurance policy? Here’s what you need to do!

Your car insurance policy document is an important piece of paper. But at the end of the day, it is still just a piece of paper – it is susceptible to lose and damage. Maybe you send your car/bike for a deep clean and remove all the documents from the vehicle, misplacing the policy document in the process. Or maybe some liquid spill destroys the policy documents – whatever the case is, the following article will tell you what you need to do to get a new policy document and continue riding/driving your car with complete peace of mind.

First things first, file a police complaint.

If your car insurance policy document is lost, one of the first things you need to do is approach the police and lodge an FIR. This is because your policy document is extremely important and, if lost, could be misused. Therefore it is best to inform the police quickly. Also, to apply for a duplicate policy document, you need an FIR.

Place an advertisement in the local paper.

Step two when applying for a duplicate motor insurance policy document is to place an advertisement in the local paper. This will show your effort in recovering the policy documents. There is a slim chance of getting your policy document back if someone finds them and sees your ad. You’ll have to mention the policy details along with your contact details in the advertisement.

Approach your insurance company.

Finally, you will have to approach your lender with the FIR and a copy of your newspaper insert to get a duplicate copy. You might be asked to submit identity & address proof documents as well. You might have to pay some nominal fee to get a duplicate and this process might take a couple of days.

Indemnity bond.

Mostly, you will also have to sign an indemnity bond. This protects the insurer from losses caused due to misuse of the original lost document. There might a minimal stamp duty involved in the process but nothing too alarming. If you are not sure how to get the indemnity bond, your four wheeler insurance provider will help you through the process.

Always keep the original document safe.

You can avoid all of this by making copies of the car insurance policy document and storing the original safely. You can keep the copies in your vehicle so that even if they are lost or damaged, you can make copies of the original and you’ll be good to go!

DigiLocker:

You can also store a copy of your motor insurance policy document in the digital locker system launched by the Government of India. This app allows you to save virtual copies of your official documents so that you can have them at hand whenever & whenever you need them!
We hope you never lose your car insurance policy documents. However, in the unfortunate event that you do, we hope these pointers will come in handy and ensure you get duplicate policy documents with ease. Hope this has been helpful, good luck and all the best. Drive safe!
